Hobby or obsession?

Writing has never been a hobby for me. Solely because I never wrote before I started studying it. I didn’t think I could. Once I realised that my writing is half-way decent it was what I wanted to do full-time.

Before this I told stories. Some fiction and some fact. I told them to everyone who would listen. I think this was a little annoying to friends and family but I love the fact I started like that. You have to think on your feet and paint a picture in just a few words. As part of my dyslexia software I have voice recognition. So I can tell the stories to the computer and it would type them. But is doesn’t work, the computer gives no reaction and that is how my stories developed. By watching the person I could gauge where the story ought to go. A computer gives no clue.

If I type the story it slows and I see it in a filmic sense. So they are more in-depth. The characters are well-rounded and the stories far more complicated. I can play with imagery and echoes so that the story hangs together with structure. Basically to write a story is very different to telling a story. I love both.

Is my writing an obsession? Yes it possibly is. I am determined to make a living at doing it. My family says I am over-optimistic. I think I am a little, but I can be nothing else. This is my dream and I have to try. In fact I have to believe I will succeed. I have to know I will. So yes my writing is an obsession. 🙂

  1. For me, both, because I get obsessed with the world I am in, and have only been paid a few times, so can’t say I’m earning a living yet… one day 🙂 x

    1. I’m not earning a living either – yet! But it is getting there. I do a bit of ghost writing when I can to bring in some more cash. At the moment though I am just writing the children’s book. I am optimistic about the future though… or is that obsessed? 🙂

  2. What a great obsession to have and there is nothing wrong with optimism! In fact, optimism is a healthy way to live your life! So best of luck in your story telling and writing! I am about to go on a creative writing course and I can’t wait….I have so many stories in my head but I don’t seem to be able to get passed the first couple of lines. I find that I don’t really know where I want to go with them and I think it is something I need to learn to focus. Anyhoo…best of luck!
