Masters tales

Screenwriting 9

The assignment is almost finished and I was just popping the last few bits together when I realised I had a scene I had cut. So I thought I would pop it on the blog just to show what I’ve been up to.

So this is the point when the antagonist, Philip, finds out that his wife, Mary (the protagonist), is carrying another man’s child.

Ext. outside a typical hospital

Mary is pregnant and stood on the outskirts of a car park. Philip is stood in front of her. Mary is rubbing her arm as if it is bruised. They are both dressed for the mid 1990’s.

PHILIP

How could you?

MARY

(She sobs.)

I…

PHILIP

They congratulated me on our child and then said that he would be due in four months. FOUR MONTHS.

MARY

Maybe they made a mistake.

PHILIP

(He takes a step toward her and she shrinks back. He quietly says.)

No, Mary. I made sure. There is no mistake.

Mary does not meet his eye but appears to have shrunk in on herself, whilst Philip has become more imposing.

MARY

Before…

PHILIP

Before we were married?

Mary nods.

PHILIP

Who was he?

Mary just looks away and Philip crowds her.

PHILIP

We have only been married for three months…

He stops and walks away. Mary is left standing there. Slowly she follows.
